Tips For Preventing Mesothelioma
Follow These Tips For Preventing Mesothelioma and Other Abestos-Caused Diseases
Asbestos is a known carcinogen and when a person inhales airborne asbestos fibers into the lungs, the person is susceptible to contracting asbestos-related diseases such as mesothelioma, asbestosis and lung cancer. There is no known cure for mesothelioma, however, removing risk factors can help prevent contracting the disease in the first place.
Avoiding exposure to asbestos is the first step in preventing the spread of the disease. In addition, the following suggestions can be beneficial in reducing the risk of getting mesothelioma:
- Wear protective clothing when working around asbestos. Any employee that is regularly exposed to asbestos as part of their job should use protective clothing such as coveralls, head coverings, gloves, and foot covering. If eye irritation exists, face shields, vented goggles, or other appropriate protective equipment should be worn.
- Get Health Screenings. Early detection of an asbestos-related illness can significantly increase your survival rate and improve your quality of life. If you have been exposed to asbestos on-the-job contact a doctor for an evaluation regardless of whether you are experiencing symptoms.
- Be Alert to Asbestos Risks. If you are aware of an asbestos risk, and have any concern about your health or that of others, take your concerns to the attention of the proper authorities.
- Follow recommended industrial procedures during asbestos removal. You should contract with a certified asbestos removal expert for large renovations. For small jobs, such as working on car brake pads, certain methods such as wetting down surfaces with water will prevent fibers from entering the air.
- Read About Asbestos and Mesothelioma. Stay abreast of news regarding asbestos and asbestos-related diseases. The more you know about mesothelioma treatments and breakthroughs, the better prepared you will be to avoid potential risks.
