Stop The Ohio Milk Labeling Fiasco!

8 September 2009 One Comment

From the Organic Trade Association comes some startling information about milk and dairy labelling requirements in Ohio.  I’m just going to re-iterate the news release here, and I’m also going to provide a link to the OTA website which is hosting a petition to stop this change to the regulations.

This petition can only be filled out by those who have an Ohio mailing address, but I think it is still good information for people to have in regards to food product labeling practises.

Take Action Now to Reclaim Your Rights to Know How Your Food is Produced

Should consumers be kept in the dark about how their milk is produced? Regulations about to take effect in Ohio will make it against the law for milk labels to tell you the whole story. They don’t want you to know whether artificial bovine growth hormone was part of the production process or not.  If you believe consumers have the right to be informed, take action now.

You can send an instant letter to Governor Ted Strickland of Ohio, by filling out the form below. Tell him to protect your right as a consumer to know how your milk is produced.

The Organic Trade Association (OTA) is appealing a Federal District Court ruling that upholds Ohio’s unprecedented regulation that takes away consumers’ rights to receive truthful information on dairy labels concerning the practices used to produce those products. The ruling goes against consumers’ interest in knowing how their food is produced, and farmers’ rights to accurately communicate their production practices to consumers.Join us and urge Governor Strickland to rescind Ohio’s Executive Order 2008-03S before it takes effect or, at a minimum, exempt organic dairy products from the regulation. If implemented, the regulation will restrict the right of dairy farmers and processors to label their products regarding the use of genetically-modified growth hormones in the production of milk.

Organic dairy products are always produced without genetically modified growth hormones, such as rBST/rBGH. Stop this executive order that will prevent organic dairy farmers and processors from truthfully communicating with consumers regarding federally-regulated organic production practices.

REMINDER:  You will need an Ohio address to fill out the form.  Please use your local business address for your dealings in that state.  OR pass this on to your contacts in that state to fill out.  Thank you!”

    Governor Strickland

It is important for the people in Ohio to read the label on a milk container and know what they are buying. This is one more incentive to people considering a move to Ohio. Like those who might come to Wright Patterson AFB. Ohio needs to be a fair and open state.

Freedom of information is cherished and needs to be respected.

    Thank you
