Stop Cold Drafty Windows and Doors with Drafts

15 January 2009 No Comment

Ok, here is an easy and cheap thing you can do to improve the comfort and efficiency of your house in the winter. This applies mostly to houses with older windows and doors, but it will also improve newer ones as well by letting less heat escape. A plastic film that is like a shrink wrap and often known as “Window Film” can be applied to your drafty windows and doors. It can be purchased at mostly any home improvement store and is relatively cheap. It will more than pay for itself in lowered heating cost.

First you need to roughly measure the problem windows and doors in your home. When you have a rough idea of how many square feet you will need, go to your local home improvement store and buy the “Window Film”.

There are two types you can get, one that uses tape to stick the film on and one that uses heat to shrink and seal the edges of the film to your windows. The heat activated kind is more effective and easier to apply. The tape on kind can leave messy residue behind when it is removed.

Now you just cut it to size and apply it to the inside of the windows. If you have the tape on kind you stick the edges down with the tape and keep it pulled tight. If you have the heat shrinking kind then you attach to the inside of the window in a similar way to cling wrap. Now you take a blow drier or a heat gun and go over the plastic film. It will stretch and shrink and seal to your window. If it is applied correctly it will not even be visible, and you can still enjoy the views from your window. These products generally come with very easy to follow instructions.

Doing this and other things to stop drafts in your house will help immensely on your comfort and heating costs.
