Compost Kitchen Scraps – Container composting, household composting

14 January 2009 No Comment

Composting happens naturally all around us every day. In the forests and other wild habitats all of the uneaten vegetation falls to the ground, is broken down over time by worms, insects and bacteria and becomes nutrient rich soil which feeds future generations of plants. It’s a beautiful cycle it is as it should be.

With a few simple steps you can reduce the garbage from your house by as much as one third and get nutrient rich soil called compost. This compost is perfect for your garden or house plants. Composting can be done inside or outside, this will outline the steps for outdoor composting.

First you will need a composting container of some sort, to leave outside that is at least 2 X 2 X 2 feet in size with, a lid and an open bottom that is exposed to the earth. You can make your own or purchase bins that are made specifically for composting. The size is not important, but you will want one that is big enough to accommodate the amount of material you put into it.

Then you will want a smaller container in your kitchen to collect your scraps in. When it is full you simply dump it in the bin outside. The scraps will decompose and turn into compost.

You should only use plant material in your composter. Even though animal products will decompose it will attract pests and smell bad. All of your yard waste and vegetable waste will turn into compost and not smell or be a problem.

You can by different bacteria to help speed the process up, but it is not necessary. If every one started composting it would make a huge difference on the health of the planet. Do your part to help!
