Fake Christmas Trees Real Christmas Trees Potted Evergreen Trees Which is Best?

9 December 2008 One Comment

This is the time of year that most people put up a Christmas tree in their home to liven up the holidays a little. One question however is whether to get yourself a real evergreen Christmas tree, a fake out of the box Christmas tree or possibly using a live, potted evergreen tree such as a Norfolk Pine Tree as your Christmas tree. It may simply be a matter of personal preference as to which Christmas tree type you ultimately decide to put up, but there are factors that you can use to come to this conclusion.

Fake Christmas Trees

There are countless problems with artificial Christmas trees. Usually, fake Christmas trees are made using PVC, which is a petroleum-derived plastic. The materials used in the manufacture of artificial trees are both non-renewable and polluting. PVC production is known to have a number of carcinogenic emissions as well.

Be warned that some artificial Christmas trees even come with explicit warning lables stating that excess lead content in the trees could result in health issues.

Potted Christmas Trees

By far and wide, this is my preference for a Christmas tree. A few years ago I purchased a potted norfolk pine tree, which in turn became my Christmas tree that year. To this day, the tree survives and is growing a few inches taller each year. Typically, with proper care, your potted Christmas tree should live for years and years to come, and if you have kids, they can watch it grow taller each Christmas just as they do!

Real Live Christmas Tree Evergreens

Many of us have probably had the experience of heading out to a Christmas tree farm with our families to hike, find and finally cut down an evergreen for our Christmas tree. Its really fun! Real Christmas trees are usually grown locally. Once you are finished with them, they can be composted as they are 100 per cent biodegradable. Artificial trees, usually produced in factories oversees need to be transported around the world and are made from a non-biodegradable petroleum based product.
