10 Easy Eco-Friendly Tips To Be That Little Bit Greener

9 September 2008 One Comment

This is a guest post from Dan Harrison. Dan is an eco friendly minded person, and he sent us these great tips for easily becoming eco friendly.

  • Conserve Fuel When Driving To substantially conserve fuel when driving, take your foot off
the accelerator when you’re about to stop. Don’t acceleration to the
place you’re about to stop at, as that will use extra fuel.
  • Clean Clogged Drains Pour a cup of baking powder down clogged drains pipes, followed by
a cup of vinegar and let it fizz and bubble for about fifteen minutes.
Then wash it down with hot water and repeat if necessary. If that
doesn’t remove the clog, a plunger will likely do the job after the
baking powder and vinegar has loosened it.
  • Get Safe Shampoo Sodium Lauryl Sulphate, an engine degreaser, is what shampoos use
to make your hair squeaky clean. It also destroys hair follicles!
Shop around health food stores for products without Sodium Lauryl
    Sulphate.
  • Safe Facial Cleansing A mixture of honey and plain yogurt left on the face for about ten
minutes cleans out the pores and softens the skin without stripping
natural oils your face needs. Diluted lemon juice is a pleasant
smelling astringent. There are many natural, earth friendly cleansers
right in your own kitchen cupboard.
  • Use Less Laundry Detergent Did you know that soap is used not to clean your clothes but
mainly to break water tension so that the water can wash away dirt and
odors? A tablespoon of soap, whether liquid or powder, is all that’s
really needed. Plain white vinegar will also clean your clothes, but
    it doesn’t smell so great!
  • Eco Friendly Bathroom Cleaning Your bathroom can sparkle without harsh chemicals. Washing these
cleansers down the drain is very harmful to the environment and hard
on your plumbing. Soap scum and limescale can be easily removed withCompact Fluorescent Light Bulb
    white vinegar.
  • Eco Friendly Lighting Compact florescent light bulbs can last for ten years and use
little power compared to their incandescent counter-parts.
  • Save Your Leftovers While food is biodegradable, it can emit gasses in landfills that
are harmful to the atmosphere, such as methane. A clean freezer
container can be used to hold your scraps of meat and vegetables. Add
your daily scraps to this container daily and store them in the
freezer. When full, put the contents into a slow cooker and you’ll
have a delicious soup. Putting the finished product through a blender
and garnishing with a little parsley or cheese will make your family
think you’ve found a new, delicious gourmet recipe.
  • Natural Air Fresheners For an air freshener use potpourri; it’s greener and you’ll be
inhaling natural odours instead of chemicals. Add your favourite
essential oil to a small bowl of water or in a spray bottle. Some
spices in boiling water will fill your house with a delicious aroma,
    too.
  • Re-use Household Waste We all know that we should shred sensitive information but what do
we do with all that waste? Save it in a box or bag and by the time
the winter holidays roll around you’ll have great packing material or
easy to use firestarter for your solid fuel burner.
