Gardening and Landscaping are great hobbies. Many people enjoy creating a wonderful garden to relax and socialize in. It is becoming increasingly common for homeowners and businesses to landscape their properties for aesthetic purposes. At times, little consideration is given to what impacts the species of plants you choose to plant will have on the surrounding environment as well as water, fertilizer and pesticide use goes. A very healthy alternative to planting a garden is landscaping with native plants.

What Are Native Plants?

If you take a walk through meadows and woods in your area, you’ll probably find many species of plants growing. Some produce beautiful flowers, others cover an area with seemingly endless, lush green foliage. Many of these wonderful plants are native to the area. Some are not, and have quite possibly been introduced by nearby landscaping and garden plants.

These native plants have evolved in the areas that they naturally occur in, and require very little if any maintenance. Many have adapted to grow with little water late in the season, or under very hot conditions. Others still have adapted to grow in wet, cool climates. Landscaping with these plants allows you to create a natural setting with plants that are native to your area, and thus very well adapted to the conditions in your area.

Why Should I Landscape With Native Plants?

There are many reasons why your should choose native species of plants when landscaping.

  • They are adapted to hot or dry conditions
  • They require very little, if any maintenance
  • There is little chance of providing the chance for invasive species to become established
  • Native plants will living longer and healthier lives
  • You’ll feel just like you are taking a walk in a local meadow or forest
