Green Eco Friendly Household Lighting – Compact Fluoresent Light Bulbs
Compact Fluorescent Bulbs – Eco-friendly and Energy Saving Hosehold Lighting
Electric lighting burns somewhere between 20% and 30% of the energy used in the average household. A great deal of the energy used to light incandescent bulbs is actually turned into heat, rather than light. Fluorescent lighting is far more efficient, and most of the energy used to power fluorescents is actually turned into light, rather than heat.
What Are Compact Fluorescents?
Compact fluorescents, or CFLs for short, are nothing more than miniature fluorescent bulbs designed to screw directly into any light bulb socket. The light produced by CFLs is different from what you would expect to find with the long, tube shaped fluorescents. The light very closely resembles that of a regular incandescent bulb.
How Efficient Are Compact Fluorescents?
CFLs are more efficient, with a 5 watt bulb producing the same amount of light, measured in lumens, as a 40 watt incandescent bulb. This is a 50% to 80% difference in energy use, depending on the CFL you choose. CFLs also have a lifetime up to 10 times longer than regular incandescents, and thus require replacement much less often.
How Do Compact Fluorescents Affect The Environment?
Replacing just one incandescent bulb with a CFL reduces your carbon footprint by a half-ton over the life of the bulb. Changing every bulb in your house to CFLs has a dramatic effect on carbon emissions.
It is also safe to expect a dramatic decrease in your electricity bill after replacing all of those inefficient incandescents throughout your home!

“Compact Fluorescent Light Bulb”

I think it will be interesting to see how long it takes for LED lights to overtake CFL’s as the green choice for lighting.
I’ve seen estimates that they only consume 1/3rd the energy of a CFL, or 1/30th of that of a incandescent. Plus, they have no mercury (unlike CFL’s). There are other benefits you can find with some research, too.
Cost is still the biggest inhibitor of adoption..hopefully their costs come down soon and we can see continued reduction in our energy consumption.
I don’t doubt that it won’t be too long before LEDs begin to take over the CFL market Ryan. As is, LEDs are a growing product that are rapily taking over store shelves to replace other, less efficient bulbs!
I hope it doesn’t take too long. If anything, after seeing my electricity bill from the month of December, I hope to have affordable LED Xmas lights by next year. I couldn’t believe how much the bill was (but then again, I kinda did the Clark Griswold this year on my house
)
